Online Raku Firing Course

Raku isn’t just about chance, it’s about learning how flame, atmosphere, and chemistry work together so you can consistently shape your results. This course gives you the tools to move beyond guesswork, showing you how to build your kiln, choose the right clay and glazes, and fire with control at every stage. We begin with safety and liability, ensuring you approach the Raku firing process with the right precautions. You’ll learn how to build and rigidize a trash-can style kiln, choose clay bodies that withstand thermal shock, and apply glazes to maximize flame and smoke effects. With the help of my former student and accomplished Raku artist, Jose Gouveia, we’ll fire together walking through preheat, carbon trapping, glaze maturity, pulling red-hot pots at 1850°F, and sealing them in reduction chambers. Afterward, you’ll learn cleaning and finishing techniques, when to apply protective coatings, and how to preserve delicate results. Finally, we’ll explore outcomes, troubleshoot failures, and dive into glaze chemistry, uncovering how copper, atmosphere, and timing create metallics, lusters, and crackle. By the end, you’ll fire with total confidence and mastery, demystifying the mysterious and predicting the unpredictable.
